Image:  Sweatshop project  by marissaorton used under CC BY-SA 2.0 Ask most people when slavery ended in the UK and they are likely to say "a long time ago".  Historians might quote the Slave Trade Act of 1807 or the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 but few are likely to say it still exists.   The 2018 Global Slavery Index estimates that Britain was home to about 136000 modern day slaves in 2016.   Analysis of some 6076 cases reported via the National Referral Mechanism in the 12 months to June 2018 suggested 66% were male.  Common industries included, food processing and packaging, construction, agriculture.   The following UK imports are at high risk of manufacture, packing and shipping involving slave labour: Apparel and clothing Laptops, computers and mobile phones Fish Cocoa Rice The 2015 Modern Slavery Act, gives law enforcers greater tools to fight slavery in the UK but is also places larger businesses under a duty to ensure that there is no slave

With concern that #schools and #colleges are now #teaching students to pass tests proposals have been made to move the focus of #inspection away from  headline data and look in more detail at how schools are achieving these results, and whether they are offering a curriculum that is broad, rich and deep. Concrew Training seen a significant increase in interest in our one-day training workshops on disciplinary and grievance procedures. The increased demand for #training in grievance and disciplinary procedures is clearly being driven by the abolition of tribunal fees, we are told the number of employment tribunal hearings is up some 75% on November 2017 and there is now something like a 6 month backlog. No company or #HR manager wants to have to go to a tribunal hearing and even fewer, if that's possible, want to have a tribunal hearing pending for 6 months.   Training managers and staff clearly helps ensure good practice is followed which is turn helps prevent matters escalating to tribunal level. Further in the event that matters do escalate being able to evidence staff training and compliance with good practice is highly advantageous. Remember: it’s not 72 working hours, the clock starts ticking from the moment you become aware of the breach. Some reports are incomplete. Our guidance sets out very clearly what you should include when you report a breach. You might not have all that information to hand in the first 72 hours, we get that, but please plan ahead; have people with suitable seniority and clearance to talk to us and be ready to provide as much detail as you can and be able to tell us when we can expect the rest.
