Chairing meetings training delivers real benefits
The effectiveness of any meeting is dependent on the quality of participation
and involvement of those present.
The #Chair and/or #Facilitator plays a key role
in encouraging and managing the contributions of all participants with significant improvements in the effectiveness of the #meeting being when the Chair is well trained in role.
The task of the Chair is to utilise the talents of the group and
move them towards the #meetings objectives or expected outcomes. This is often difficult to achieve
The Chair may need to exert more control
at the beginning of a meeting when a group is newly formed, or when the meeting
is particularly large.
Being over controlling, however, will inhibit debate and
may reduce participants’ sense of ownership of the tasks. The trick is to
strike a balance between control and participation:
Our one-day workshop on Being a more effective Chair equips participants with theory and skills for effective group chairing
and facilitation.
The course
gives participants a psychologically informed, skills-based approach to group
facilitation using a training model designed specifically for this course.
The
course uses several learning activities and requires high levels of
participation for practising and reflecting on skills.
As a
result of attending this course you will be able to:
- Define the difference between a facilitator and a trainer or teacher
- Define the expected role and remit of a Chair
- Use the suite of chairing/facilitation skills practised on the course in both paid work and any voluntary activity
- Assess your own chairing/facilitation skills and areas for development
- Explain and understand group dynamic theory
- Identify a range of techniques for managing the group collectively and individuals
- Real life community group scenarios will be used on the course for both live practice and to secure feedback from all participants.
