Growing Pains for SME Business

Growing pains for SME
As small and medium size enterprises grow and develop they face an increasing level of legislation and reporting that their management teams need to understand comply with fully.    Compliance often demand changes to practice, policies and procedures, all of which need to be subjected to impact assessments to ensure equalities and data protection laws are met.

It is a potential minefield and unless thought through and well planned each new requirement will necessitate much research, stress and worry for management.  This can be minimised by buying in training and consultancy to help the management team understand exactly what is required and how they can meet the challenge with the least amount of stress and burden.

Concrew Training is pleased to be able to offer such training and assistance.

The pinch points that typically demand the most support are listed below

The Modern Slavery Act - £36M+ Turnover
Businesses and Organisations need to detail what action is being taken to ensure that there is no #slavery in their business or supply chain.   The requirement to meet the Modern Slavery Act is often cascaded to smaller organisations through supply chain contracts.

At the very least this will demand staff awareness training and supply chain audits

Gender and Executive Pay Gap Reporting - 250+ Staff
Organisations have to report on both their #genderpay gap that is to say the differences between the average pay (and bonuses) for men and women and also how this compares with the pay of their chief executive.  Management need to understand how to calculate the average pay, the best ways to present and report on it and how to address any ill will and/or publicity that may occur as a result of the reporting

Information and Consultation of Employees - 50+ Staff
The regulations relating to information and consultation of staff give employees the right to request that their employer sets up consultative arrangements, or makes changes to existing arrangements.  Fines of up to £75,000 apply for non-compliance.

Significant business benefit can be had when an effective well trained and motivated employee representation forum is in place.  Concrew training provides training and guidance on effective set up and follow on training to help employee representatives be more effective in general role or to understand their duties in specific situations.

Right for Time off Work for Training – 250+ Staff
Staff who have been employed for 6 months are allowed to request unpaid time off work to attend training.   There is a strict predetermined process that needs to be followed when making a decision on whether to approve the request or not.  Operational and HR management need to understand the process and the rules that govern such requests

GDPR and Data Protection
Whilst there is no clear cut off point it is probable that as organisations and business grow in size they will be more likely to have data processing activities that necessitate the appointment of a Data Protection Officer, that is to say an expert in data protection who oversees and takes responsibility for data protection, GDPR, The PECR and Impact Assessment compliance.
